Women’s central tennis win bag

PELLA — The Central College women’s tennis team picked up another victory Saturday afternoon, beating Northwestern College 6-3.

The Dutch (11-9) beat the Red Raiders (4-5) a day after beating a tough Simpsons side 8-1.

“The tenacity factor is definitely there,” coach Ryun Ferrell noted. “We just need to play more and get back to a similar place where we were in October. It takes time but the team knows where they are going.”

In his fifth game of the spring, Central’s bottom half of his singles roster featured three new faces that weren’t part of his fall roster. Alli Krieder (second year, Norwalk) won 7-5, 6-7, 10-5 at No. 4, Jenna Hernandez (sophomore, Slater, Ballard HS) won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 and Ashlyn Brant (junior, Glidden, Carroll HS) won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6.

“We had three players in the lineup who weren’t there in the fall win,” Ferrell said. “It’s great to see because it keeps you excited about the future.”

Hernandez overcame a 5-2 deficit in the second set of their singles match.

“It’s not easy to do against anybody,” Ferrell said. “She knew how to keep her cool, stay calm and change her style a bit.”

Hernández and Alex Griggs (elder, Knoxville) won 8-3 at No. 3 in doubles. Alyssa Lewton (senior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and Maddie Hartley (elder, Clarinda) won 8-1 at No. 1 in doubles. Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 in singles.

The Dutch men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., to take on the NCAA Division II school at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
