Walcot Community shop sells clothes for £1 to help those in need

A local community store is selling all its clothes for £1 per item to help tackle the cost of living crisis.

The community store on Somerville Road in Walcot has decided to sell its clothes as cheaply as possible to help people struggling with the rising cost of living.

One of the shop’s volunteers, Peter Manninson, has been volunteering at the shop for 15 years and does all he can to help those in need in Swindon.

“Even though we call ourselves Walcot Community Shop, we are here to help anyone in need.

“We’re here to help anyone who needs help, not those who just need it.”

For this reason, everything in the store is at the cheapest possible price.

Not only do clothes cost £1 per item, but furniture prices range from around £15 to £80.

“What’s the point of taking more money if we give it back?” said Peter.

Swindon announcer:

The reason they are able to price so cheaply is because the charity is run by volunteers and the only charges taken from profits are rent and location bills plus fees movement of volunteers.

The problem, according to Peter, is finding ways to give back to the community.

“We need help finding people to help.

“We are not here to solve problems, but to help reduce the stress of the problem.”

Some of the previous ways the store has helped are by donating money to local schools, giving money back to a pensioner who was robbed right outside the store

Peter told the advertiser: “A few years ago a mum came into the store and needed school shoes for her children, so we helped her.

“We also helped another woman put petrol in her car to visit her dying husband in Oxford.”

Swindon announcer:

The store is now urging people who may be struggling with the growing cost of living crisis to come to the store to buy winter coats and clothing to help them stay warm in the coming winter months.

They sell their coats for £1 each, just like the rest of their clothes. If you are there on the right day, you might also find other treasures.

“We brought in a man a few weeks ago who bought three suits for £3, so it’s £1 per suit.

“A woman also came in and bought three padded winter coats for £3 in total.”
