‘Ukay’ clothing and accessories are a hit with Filipino shoppers, Carousell says

Women’s fashion was the most sought-after second-hand category in the Philippines, according to online marketplace Carousell.

The report found that Filipino buyers bought the most in the category of “Women’s fashion” for three consecutive years on the platform since 2018.

This category tops the rankings for the greatest supply and demand for used products on the platform.

  • Men’s fashion
  • Cars for sale

The most wanted items on Carousell are women’s bags and wallets, the report adds.

Keyword research trends, on the other hand, have been described as “rocky” in the report since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A growing demand for face masks and used cars was also recorded in February 2020.

“Demand for masks increased in February as cases of Covid-19 were recorded. The demand for used cars has increased as a result, as a safe and safe way to get around, ”the report noted.

“Users searched for both make and model of cars, as well as broad keyword searches with location qualifiers such as ‘used cars in Manila’. BMW was a popular search term among new and used cars throughout the period, ”he added.

For the remainder of 2020, searches for electronics and fashion items were consistently at the top of the rankings.

“The resilient items were electronics and fashion, with searches for specific ZARA brands and keyword searches for laptops holding steady over the past 1.5 years. Luxury brands such as CHANEL have also seen an upward trend, following the initial drop at the start of the pandemic, ”the report says.

Respondents were found to be motivated by the prices of second-hand goods in their purchasing choices. Filipinos joined with those in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore in saying second-hand items offered better value for money.

“When it comes to the main reasons for choosing the opportunity, pragmatism is key. The most popular reason in the region was value for money, with 68% of the total respondents choosing this reason, ”the report says.

“This is most evident in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, with over 70% of those polled choosing this option,” he added.

Reused and recycled items were also purchased from Carousell with “environmental sustainability” as the second determining factor for consumers in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

The data was consolidated from a survey of 3,029 of its users in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The survey was carried out in June 2021.
