Tocco Toscano and Singpore Airlines turn life jackets into accessories

Who among us actually pays attention to the safety demonstration on flights, especially if you regularly travel by plane? Most of us would probably just flip through the in-flight magazine or do something else rather than listen to it for the umpteenth time (though of course we know how important that is). One thing I wonder when I watch the flight attendants show us how to use the oxygen vests and masks is where can I get one as a keepsake or memento (don’t try to bring one back to the house because it is against the regulations).

Designer: Tocco Toscano / Singapore Airlines

While you still can’t get an exact replica of airline life jackets and seat belts, you can now get some of them through upcycled fashion items. Singapore Airlines has partnered with local women’s handbag maker Tocco Toscano to offer a range of accessories using the airlines’ ‘expired’ or disused life jackets. Instead of just adding to the unrecycled waste of this planet, we will now see these life jackets recycled into fashionable and functional accessories.

Each life jacket is transformed into six quite useful and functional things. You will get a cell phone bag, a coaster, a bi-fold wallet, an everyday clutch, a long wallet, and even a bracelet clutch. Seat belts that are also now unused are also transformed into bag straps that you can use not necessarily with these life jacket accessories, but for your other bags and pouches that may need straps. We won’t be surprised if we eventually see masks or even airplane seats eventually recycled into something else.

Each of these accessories is reinforced with apple weathering and even this leather substitute is made from recycled materials from, you guessed it, apple scraps. Interestingly enough, the vests are cut so you still see the graphics, illustrations, and even instructions that you would see on the actual vest. It bears the usual Tocco Toscano branding elements and features alongside the Singapore Airlines logo. So if you’re a fan of one or both, this may be a collectible for you.

There are different packs available if you want to get some or all of these accessories, but they are also available individually. It would also be nice if you could buy items on the fly. I’m not really a fan of the yellow color so it might not be on my list of things to buy, but since some of them are already sold out there is a market for it. Looking forward to more upcycled and recycled air travel materials.
