The Church of the Cross community changing room is now open

Lilies of the Field Clothes Closet, offering new and gently used clothes to customers free of charge, is now open at Church of the Cross (Presbyterian USA) in Hoffman Estates.

The church, at 475 W. Higgins Road, has converted several ground-floor classrooms into a community clothes closet to help those in need. Clothing for men, women, and children is available during business hours, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday; from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays: and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the first and third Saturdays of the month.

“We put clothes on racks and shelves like a retail store to allow customers to choose their own clothes,” said Reverend Julie Peterson, pastor of the Church of the Cross. “We strive to provide a friendly and respectful atmosphere for local people who are going through difficult times and financial difficulties.”

The church purchased new socks and underwear to go along with the gently used clothing donated by church members and the community. Donated clothes have been washed or dry-cleaned, but the church also offers free laundry detergent packets to patrons. Initially, the clothes closet is occupied by volunteers from the congregation.
