Don’t call it a hybrid: Trek debuts ‘gravel-ready’ FX Sport Carbon

Trek’s new FX Sport Carbon has been given a complete overhaul and is now transformed into a “gravel-ready fitness bike”.

Touted as a “new category leader”, Trek sought to blend “the looks of an Émonda, the versatility of an FX and the capability of a checkpoint” and all at a “more competitive price than never”. Take this last point, we will come back to it later.

The three bikes in the range all feature a 400 Series OCLV Carbon frame and fork, while the two more expensive models both use a 1×11 Shimano GRX drivetrain with an off-the-shelf shifter for use with the flat handlebar.

Tire clearance is a maximum of 42mm with 700c wheels and the frame comes with mounts for a rear rack and a full set of fenders.

Of course, these are all features that can also be seen on different hybrid bike models. Perhaps the area where the FX Sport Carbon—with its “gravel-ready” credentials—differs the most is in price.

The top-end FX Sport 6 costs $2,599.99 / £3,000, resplendent with frame-matched carbon wheels and a largely third-tier Shimano groupset (105-tier components), barring the derailleur rear GRX RX812 equivalent Ultegra.

Compare that to Canyon’s $2,099.00 / £1,949.00 Roadlite CF 8 carbon hybrid bike, which at least fits an Ultegra crankset to the rear derailleur – although most of the rest of the group is level 105 and the wheels are aluminum. But again, considering the price, you’d have plenty left over for upgrades.

Even between Trek’s own models, the price is a surprise. For $2,299.99 you can get a Procaliber 9.5 (or for £2,150.00 you can get a Carbon Procaliber 9.6) each a hardtail mountain bike with a Shimano 1×12 drivetrain and 100mm RockShox front suspension. Of course, a direct comparison to a mountain bike is tricky, but it feels like you get a little more for your money.

Rapha has teamed up with Canadian cyclocross star Maghalie Rochette to launch a limited-edition collection of kits for men and women, inspired – quite uniquely – by Rochette’s part-time hobby, beekeeping. .

The almost psychedelic collection of abstract shapes and colors was inspired by bees’ ability to see colors that we cannot. “Basically, it’s just a good vibe,” Rochette said, “it puts a smile on my face and gives me the right attitude to tackle any kind of tough training, long adventure or big race!”
