Wrestler Nicolaas de Lange notched a silver medal in the 97kg freestyle for Team SA at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, while boxing added two bronze medals and athletics a third.
De Lange was battling in the same division where SA won gold at Gold Coast 2018, courtesy of Martin Erasmus, but came up against talented Canadian Nishan Randhwawa in the final, losing 3-9 on points.
What he lacked in talent he made up for with heart, trying until the very end to pull off an unlikely victory.
Boxers Simnikiwe Bongco and Phiwokuhle Mnguni both lost their semifinals on points, but it earned them bronze.
Zeney van der Walt delivered a sensational finish in the women’s 400m hurdles as she came from behind the field to take bronze with a personal best 54.47 seconds.
If she had timed her race a little better, she might have been stunned by defending Jamaican champion Janieve Russell, the winner in 54.14.
The men’s hockey team lost a hard-fought semi-final to India 3-2, relegating them to the bronze medal play-off on Monday, the final day of the Games.
Loot of the day could not prevent the SA team, with seven gold, eight silver and 11 bronze, from slipping to eighth place in the medal table after being overhauled by Nigeria.
