Nesthy Petecio and Hergie Bacyadan land ASBC slant bronze medals

Nesthy Petecio and Hergie Bacyadan gave in to separate opponents to return home with bronze medals each at the 2022 ASBC Asian Men’s and Women’s Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan on Wednesday, November 9.

Petecio lost to Karina Ibragimova 5-0 in the women’s 57kg featherweight division after judges from Italy, Thailand, Algeria, Tajikistan and Tunisia scored the same 30- 26 in favor of the Kazakh fighter.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medalist earned a first-round bye and prevailed over Thailand’s Nilawan Techausuep in the quarter-finals before losing to Ibragimova.

Bacaydan, meanwhile, suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to Uzbekistan’s Ruzmetova Sokhiba in the women’s 75kg middleweight category. She scored 29-28 against judges from India and Chinese Taipei, and 28-29 against judges from Italy, Tunisia and Morocco.

Carlo Paalam remains the only Filipino to take part in the tournament as he currently takes on Kyrgyzstan’s Seidekmatov Sanzhai in the men’s 54kg bantamweight semi-final.

Paalam is coming off wins over Muhanov Dovlet of Turkmenistan and Joosung Yoon of South Korea.
