MONROE CITY, Mo. – A Monroe City woman is in custody after law enforcement suppressed an active shooter incident Tuesday, one block from Monroe City Junior High School.
Stephanie L. O’Connor, 48, was transported to Randolph County Jail in Huntsville, Missouri, where she is being held without a warrant. Monroe County District Attorney Kevin Bross charged O’Connor with unlawful use of a weapon and disorderly conduct.
The City of Monroe Police Department received reports around 1 p.m. Tuesday of a female subject with a firearm near the N. Main and Court area. Initial reports said the woman was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and also had an ammunition bag. Reports said the suspect was behaving in an aggravated manner and making multiple verbal threats against others.
When law enforcement arrived, O’Connor had returned to her residence with the gun and could be heard screaming from the residence. For safety reasons, traffic has been diverted from the area. The neighboring residences were evacuated for safety reasons.
Law enforcement attempted several avenues of contact with O’Connor without success. Members of the Monroe City Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office eventually contacted her at the scene and spoke to her to defuse the situation.
After talking for more than 30 minutes, law enforcement officers were able to defuse the situation and O’Connor was taken into custody without further incident.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol provided assistance. The City of Monroe Fire Department and City of Monroe Street Department diverted traffic from the area.
