RIVERHEAD, NY — A man was charged Monday with stealing a woman’s bag from her car, police said.

According to Riverhead Police, at 2:48 p.m. officers were investigating a crash on Roanoke Avenue, just south of Dunkin’ Donuts. A passerby told an officer that a man was seen looking into vehicles parked in the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, police said.

Next, the investigating officer saw a man fitting the description walking with a woman’s wallet; the officer arrested the man and questioned him, police said.

As they spoke, the woman who owned the purse approached and identified the bag as hers, police said.

The man, Anthony Robinson, 57, who was residing at a shelter in Riverhead, stole the wallet, which contained credit cards and a key fob, from the woman’s vehicle, police said. He was able to get into the vehicle because the woman had left her key fob in her purse inside, police said.

Robinson, who initially lied about his identity, was arrested and charged with third degree criminal possession of stolen property; fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property; and false impersonation, police said.

Robinson was held for arraignment, police said.
