Cheshire man jailed after snatching elderly woman’s bag

A MAN who snatched a purse from an elderly woman has been jailed at Chester Crown Court.

Glenn Williams, 36, of Manchester, pleaded guilty to the theft which took place in a Handforth car park and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, officers were informed that a 75-year-old woman was the victim of a theft as she walked through a parking lot that afternoon.

Williams had approached her on her bike and ripped her bag from behind. It contained her cell phone, purse, and a sentimental photo.

The Wilmslow Beat team officer in the case thoroughly examined both local authority CCTV and private CCTV, and although the offense was not captured, footage showed a masked man riding a bicycle in the region before and after the incident.

Believing him to be the assailant, the officer eventually found a still image of him not wearing the mask at some distance from the scene. The officer also found a photo of him with the victim’s bag on his handlebars.

Another local beating agent subsequently identified Williams as the offender from the stills. Agents from the Wilmslow Beat team then arrested Williams in Manchester and while searching for his address, found the bike he was riding during the theft. They also found some of the clothes he was wearing that day in a trash can.

Macclesfield Local Police Unit Inspector Andy Baker said: “After a six-month investigation, the strength of the evidence that had been assembled against Williams led him to plead guilty to the theft.

“I hope this will reassure residents that we will relentlessly prosecute those who commit crimes and bring them to court. I also hope this serves as a warning to those who intend to commit crimes that the Cheshire officers are dedicated to their role in protecting the public and are determined to stop you dead. ”
