A woman had loaded a handgun into carry-on luggage at the PIT

A Swissvale woman was prevented from bringing a loaded handgun in her carry-on to Pittsburgh International Airport. Transportation Security Administration officers detected the weapon in the woman’s bag Thursday. The 9mm gun was loaded with two rounds and packed with an additional 35 rounds. TSA agents notified Allegheny County Police who confiscated the weapon. “It’s so serious that because this traveler took her gun to the checkpoint, she now faces a federal financial civil penalty of up to thousands of dollars.” This was the 13th seizure of a firearm at the airport this year. Thirty-two were found in 2021. Across the country, TSA agents detected 5,972 firearms on passengers or their carry-on luggage at checkpoints last year. Of the weapons captured by the TSA in 2022, approximately 86% were loaded.

TSA agents prevented a traveler from carrying this gun and its loaded ammunition on x20;his flight at Pittsburgh International Airport on July 21.

“Bringing a loaded firearm to an airport security checkpoint is a serious offense,” said Karen Keys-Turner, TSA’s director of federal security for the airport. “It’s so serious that because this traveler took her gun to the checkpoint, she now faces a federal financial civil penalty that could be in the thousands of dollars.”

This was the 13th seizure of a firearm at the airport this year. Thirty-two were found during the year 2021.
