4 Tips to Style and Accessorize Your Salwar Kurta Like a Pro
Salwaar Kameez is an outfit that can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. And although there are many formal and casual outfits, most Indian women feel comfortable wearing the salwar kurta because it can never let you down in any occasion. Himanshu Wardhan, Founder of Thevasa shares that there are three factors that mainly determine how a salwar kameez can be accessorized and styled. Here are some quick tips on how you can style your regular salwar kameez with these basic accessories available in your little box.
neckline of the kurta
The neck of the Kurta plays a very important role in the style of a Salwar Kameez. If the neck is deep, a thick neck piece next to the neck would be a great choice to enhance the outfit. You can also wear it with long/dressy earrings like chand ballas and wear the dupatta just off the neck to give a finished look to the outfit.
If the neck is high or collared, dressed studs in the ears along with slicked back hair shift the focus to the face making for an emphatic look. You can also ditch the earrings together and layer chunky pieces on top of the kurta to create a dramatic formal look.
Scarves are of course a great option that can be worn with any type of outfit, structured or draped.
The nature of the bottom
Stockings are also experiencing a revolution these days – Dogri Salwaar, Patiala Salwaar, Pakistani Salwaar, Cigarette Pants, Plazoes, Gararas to name a few.
If the bottom is wide and ruffled, consider styling it with flats like juttis and sandals or block heels like kohlapuris wedges, etc.
When stockings become more elegant, heels look great. Try styling chudidars, cigarette pants, etc. with stiletto heels.
If it’s a casual look you’re after, feel free to pair the ensemble with some solid color sneakers.
You can also add accessories such as pajebs/anklets and toe rings in case the shoes are open toed. These accessories really take an outfit from dull to fabulous.
The sleeves also play an important role in helping you style the look to perfection. Sleeveless kurtas are best styled with stacked wristbands and maybe even an armband.
Long sleeves are best accessorized with rings – chunky, sleek, or layered, whichever suits you.
3/4 or short sleeves can be worn with almost anything, such as large karas, many bracelets, harnesses or even cocktail rings.
Bags play a huge role in achieving any look. Potlis and clutches look great with Salwaar Kameezes. Shoulder bags also look great if you’re going for a funky casual look. You can either color block or match it to your outfit.
Make sure the accessories complement the outfit. They should match or be a complementary contrast.
Stick to one metallic color for accessories and rarely match different metallic hues unless the outfit calls for it.
A statement piece is more emphatic, so invest in accessories that stand out.
Make sure the accessories complement the look rather than compete for attention.
